First of all, you have to learn how to remove their bristles and spines: hold the fruit using heavy gloves, fork or tongs under running water and scrape the spikes off with a knife. Then, holding them with a fork, cut the top and the bottom with a sharp knife. Cut the skins from top to bottom, and remove the peel completely. They are ready to eat. Cover fruit with water and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes to 1 hour. If necessary, mash the fruit with a potato masher. Strain through colander or strainer, to remove the numerous seeds. It can be pureed in a blender.
